Based on the reporting from your creditors to the three bureaus, you will be given a numerical score, that reflects your level of 'credit worthiness'. This number is based on:

  • The number and types of accounts you have opened.
  • The amount of time the accounts have been open
  • How many late payments that have been made, and how late.
  • Current total accumulated debt.
  • Any attempts made to open more accounts.

Every company that issues credit will examine the score to determine the risk and the likeliness that the loan will be repaid.  The companies get the information to make their decision based on the reporting from past creditors to the credit reporting agencies.

The 3 Credit Reporting Agencies

  • Equifax
  • Experian
  • TransUnion

Each of these nationwide credit-reporting agencies maintains a credit history on every person. Most companies obtain a report from each of the three credit reporting agencies.  They use the middle FICO score of the three to determine the borrower’s credit worthiness.
